ENVER MICHAEL SAMUEL

Enver has studied both practical and theoretical aspects of Film and Television both locally and abroad, in England, Australia and Germany. A scholarship enabled him to obtain a Bachelor of Arts in Media Studies from Edith Cowan University, Perth Australia (1990 – 1992). Enver was placed on a work placement at the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) in Sydney. Enver returned to South Africa and joined independent T.V production company Talent Consortium as a producer/director from February 1993 to December 1995. He also spent 3 months at Yorkshire T.V, England on a work exchange programme in 1995. The lure of one of South Africa’s then leading film and video producers – Prime Time International, was too much to refuse and Enver joined them as an in-house producer/director.

In June 1996 Enver took the bold step to join the ranks of the freelance world as a producer/director (EMS Productions) working on numerous television productions and high profile corporate videos, combining this with lecturing in Television Journalism/Production at the Institute for the Advancement of Journalism (IAJ). In addition to being a member of the Film and Publication Board (FPB) from 1998 – 2014, Enver served on The National Film & Video Foundation’s (NFVF) training and bursary committee and is currently on the documentary panel of the NFVF. From 2012 to present Enver served as a South African Film & Television Award Judge (SAFTA). Enver has worked on various productions that were SAFTA nominated, including a SAFTA winner for Solving It.

Enver produced and directed the documentary Indians Can’t Fly for SABC3 Docuville that was an official selection for the prestigious Durban International Film Festival and Toronto South Africa Film Festival,  Indians Can’t Fly was nominated for three South African Film & Television Awards (SAFTA’s), best director, best documentary, best editor for documentary short, winning best achievement in directing and best documentary short.   Enver  won a SAFTA for Someone To Blame – The Ahmed Timol Inquest – best documentary short, 2019.  This documentary was  selected for the Vancouver South Africa Film Festival 2019, Encounters South Africa International Film Festival 2019, Zanzibar International Film Festival 2019-winner best documentary, Jozi Film Festival 2019-winner Best documentary- COSAFF 2020winner best documentary and INPUT Bangkok 2019.  Murder in Paris, has been  selected for the Durban FilmMart 2019 at the Durban International Film Festival. It was broadcast on SABC3 on Human Right Day March 21st 2021. It was selected for  Encounters 2021 where it was one of the top 3 most watched documentaries. It won Best Documentary and the Inaugural Human Rights Award at DIFF 2021.
